College is one of those topics that’s on every seniors mind. But one aspect that not many want to think about is studying. Some may be thinking, “How will I have time to study?” “What if my roommate is too loud and I can’t focus?” All of us have thought about this and it makes all of us nervous.

Don’t freak out though! There are some really easy things you can do to help you focus and study more efficiently. The most important thing is to make a contract with your new roommate, set some ground rules about when study time is and to show respect for each other by staying quiet during those times. This works the much better than potentially starting an argument with her anytime you want some quiet but she wants to play her music.

Another tip is to use the library on campus, they may seem crowded and noisy but there will always be a place in there where you can park yourself, spread everything out, and get to work. A personal favorite of mine that I plan to utilize as much as possible is outside on a beautiful day in the middle of the courtyard or grassy area. Not only is this quiet but it’s also very peaceful and calming.

With these tips, the stress and anxiety about where to find a quiet place should be simple and easy.

by Jessica Sizemore Waterfront Wednesday is a summer tradition in Louisville. Most Wednesdays throughout the summer local and upcoming bands play in the heart of downtown Louisville, on the great lawn. All waterfront Wednesday concerts are free and can be a fun, relaxing thing to do with friends during your summer. The concerts are hosted by the radio station 91.9 WFPK and feature many bands that are played on their radio station. The 2012 summer will be the tenth year of these concerts, and are expected to have a wide variety of bands playing.

Standing next to a 500 degree oven on a 90 degree day serving others delicious Italian food is my idea of a summer job. Summer jobs are a hot topic on every high schooler and the “coming home” college student.

Looking for jobs this summer will be hard since everyone is looking for that quick money maker to help them pay for the cost of summer time activities. Jobs like life guarding and ice cream shops are commonly talked about in the walls of Assumption.

Senior Kelly Fleischer is a nanny for a family in the Highlands. Within her job she is able to take the kids to see movies, go to the park, zoo, and go to Lakeside pool. “It’s a fun and relaxing job because I get to do fun activities with the kids. I even get to lie out at the pool; something I’d already be doing if I wasn’t babysitting.”

A few loctations in Louisville that are hiring are Dunkin Donuts, Jason’s Deli, and certain pools with approved life guarding certificate.

This summer don’t be a bum and get out there and find a job. College is around the corner and saving up would be a smart idea. Help your parent’s pocket books this summer and make your own money!

By Natalie Feldkamp The dripping thirst loyal Seluah fans have experienced is yet overdue. The indie rock band has nearly waited ten years to release their new album, “Red Parole”. The local Louisvillian band are coming back into their being, wowing critics, and sparking talk of their audacity to release such an album as “Red Parole”.

Though most of their songs consist of drone sounding vibrations and slow- tempoed instrumentals, there really is something about their unique ability that makes them stick. A sense of heat is depicted in each of the album’s tracks; a mirage in the Sahara type of feel.

Also, there is an immeasurable amount of sincerity put into this album. Clearly, the writers of both the music and the lyrics were in a melancholy, drowning stage of their lives, yet they show those emotions with a passionate and soulful approach. That sense of heart wrenching, genuine sentiment is what transforms a decent band into a musical masterpiece.

Songs such as “The Other Side of The Gun” and “Killing the Angels” bring listeners into this unexplainable, out-of-body-experience. This hypnotic occurrence comes from the depths of the bass guitar practically living in a symbiotic relationship with the consuming, nearly paranormal, vocals.

You must be warned, this album is not for everyone on every occasion. This album is not for weekend dance parties, upbeat, cross-country convertible road trips, or nights on the town. This album is for listeners willing to reach their emotional plight on a deep, authentic level, and of course the appreciation for similar indie rock bands, Radiohead being one. For those reluctant listeners, take a step back, and simply allow every aspect of every song to seep deep into your pores and drown your ear drums in all the madness that is Seluah.

Although many of us couldn’t be happier to move on to the next chapter, we all have that feeling of sadness since it’s our final year here. Not only is the page turning in our lives but our high school story is coming to a bittersweet end.

Never again will we walk through these halls in our senior sweatshirts. Never again will we have seniority over all the little underclass women. But no matter what, we will always be sisters. We have been together for the past four years and some of us have created bonds that can never be broken. Friendships that will last forever.

College is right around the corner and for some of us that means huge opportunities. Every single one of us has just a bright future ahead that it’s hard to not look forward to it and getting out of here. But what we need it do is never forget what got us to where we are. The people who have taught us, the friends we’ve made, and the memories we will never forget.

He asked all of the men in his squad whose picture this was but nobody knew. After surviving some happenings that some of his friends weren’t too lucky to walk away from, he decided that he needed to find this woman and thank her for saving his life.

After returning home from Iraq, Logan was a different person. He was antsy and constantly paranoid, a problem that a lot of people coming home from the military have. He was having trouble adjusting to life back at home so he decided to take his dog for a walk…from Louisiana to Colorado. While in Colorado, he locates Beth (Taylor Schilling); whose picture he claims saved him while he was in Iraq.

Logan starts working for Beth at her dog kennel, and they eventually fall in love. Beth’s young son, a tragic family ordeal, and an abusive ex-husband all add up to a dramatic plot line in this movie. This is rated PG-13 for some language and romantic scenes, but overall I think that the cast and crew did a great job portraying it like the novel by Nicholas Sparks.

By Katie George The 138th Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands was record breaking across-the-board. A crowd totaling to 165, 307 arrived at Churchill Downs Racetrack for a great day for horseracing. It was here, that the crowd watched I’ll Have Another miraculous outrun Bodemeister at the final links to cross the finish line first, capturing the $2 million prize. This year’s attendance beat last year’s record breaking crowd of 164, 858. The 2011 record was the first year to break the attendance record since 1974 when the on-track attendance reached a maximum 163, 628. The rising numbers continue to please Churchill officials and employees. Not only does the attendance leaps excite Churchill Downs but the revenue increase does as well. After calculating the wagers from all the sources available at the racetrack, Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby race card amounted to $187.0 million. The highest it has ever been in Churchill Downs history and 13.2 percent increase from last year’s record. The wagering race card from 2011 was $165.2 million. However, of the $187.0 million earned, Churchill Downs returned $153.3 million to bettors. As far as the winning horse goes, I’ll Have Another earned the owner, trainer and jockey their first career wins in the Kentucky Derby race and himself $2, 093, 600. Jockey, Mario Gutierrez, from Mexico, won the Kentucky Derby on his first try on his first mount.

This parade marked the 57th annual Pegasus Parade marching down Broadway. This year’s parade theme was Family, Games, and Fun.

One group of juniors consisting of Kelsey Kaiser, Erin Mullen, and Allison Zickel held the banner for the Derby City Roller Girls. The girls were originally supposed to hold the Republic Bank banner but were instead switched to the Derby City Roller Girls since Republic Bank had too many people. The freshman basketball coach, Coach Gondalfo, coordinated the involvement of the Assumption students in the parade. “It was a lot of fun, and I want to do it again next year,” said Kaiser.

Another group of girls participated in the parade alongside a different unit, the Equestrian Unit. Allyson Cissell, Jaclyn Ochsner, Brittani Loeser, Emily Goodin, and Leah Oppel participated in their second derby parade as infamous pooper scoopers. “Jaclyn signed us up last year because she thought it would be funny, and we had so much fun that we wanted to do it again this year,” said Oppel, junior.

Last year, the group sported masks and capes displaying “Terd Herd,” the team name, to go along with the theme of Super Scoopers for Super Hero theme. “We were a crowd favorite last year. We were starting chants, cheering the crowd up, and turning with the horses,” said Loeser.

However, this year the “ScooperStars” shopped for costumes last minute and decided on t-shirts with Snoopy saying “I need a drink” to correspond with the high 80-degree weather and all the sweat from their hard work. “It was very hot this year but still worth it,” said Goodin. “I hope we have the opportunity to continue our annual tradition since we have so much fun.”

And with celebrities come party crashers.
Many teenagers, including Assumption students, don their best dresses and try to avoid the Barnstable Brown security. Many try, and many fail. This year I am proud to say that I am one of the few who can say that they successfully crashed the Gala.
Getting in was significantly easier than walking around Tricia Barnstable Brown (of the Doublemint Twins’ fame)’s house in my five-inch heels all night. The key, of course, was to act like I belonged.
This proved to be easier said than done when I came face-to-face with celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Kellan Lutz, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Cyndi Lauper, and Tom Brady. It’s hard not to feel out of place when you’re standing next to a man good-looking enough to be one of Twilight’s famed vampires.
Regardless, the party was everything I had hoped it would be, with added bonuses like catering by the Comfy Cow. The Barnstable Brown Gala will undoubtedly become an annual part of my Derby week, whether the hostess knows it or not.
